One day sculpture project: ‘instability’
It’s the hardest thing in the world to be given a one day project and have a brain full of ideas but nothing to make things from so this topic required a dash to town and buying the most random things for my piece.
The whole thing is about the instability of the female body, in particular young people who fall pregnant, and especially those who don’t know they are pregnant until too late- when i was younger i used to be fascinated by this story of someone giving birth into a toilet because they never knew they were pregnant, so i guess it all stems from that. Pregnancy also puts someone in quite a vulnerable and uncertain position, of not knowing when a baby might come, which is why I wanted to use the balloon, which could pop or float away (really tricky to carry a helium balloon through heavy wind storms). I positioned my model having just given birth but as the person who gave my crit said, they weren’t sure what to say, whether the baby had been born alright, or not, or if the person had just lost it. Another person liked that the balloon said ‘baby shower’, representing the cleaning and cleansing of the person once they wash themselves, get rid of the blood, and return to an almost normal state, even after the trauma. I used my own shoes, and made the legs using fragile bubble wrap, to also represent the instability of someone young and in pain.
